CLINICAL WORK:
Otology and Neuro-otology
I worked as a substantive Consultant at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire and George Elliot Hospitals between 2004 and 2022. Since 2022 I have worked as an independent ENT Consultant. Otology (ear), Neuro-otology (dizziness) and Eustachian Tube problems are my chosen area of supra-specialist interest. I undertake most middle ear and external ear surgery including tympanomastoid surgery and stapes surgery. I have carried out over 1200 major ear cases. An audit of my stapedectomy results were similar to international experts with 94% success. A myringolplasty audit revealed 90% success. Ossiculoplasty results were on par with national standards.
I undertake the Balloon Eustachian Tube procedure (for treatment of blocked and patulous eustachian tubes). I have published an article in this area.
I undertake intratympanic therapy for otological conditions (vertigo, Meniere’s disease patients).
I am involved in assessment and management of patients with vertigo.
During my TWJ fellowship at Ann Arbor I had the opportunity to visit the Clinical Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Michigan. I visited the Causse Clinic, Beziers in autumn of 2005 (via TWJ foundation)
Twice a year I organise a national Temporal Bone Dissection course.
Rhinology and Facial Plastics
I undertake assessment and treatment of nasal and sinus problems.
Head and Neck
I undertake assessment of laryngeal and pharyngeal symptoms including endoscopy.
Paediatric Otolaryngology
I deal with a paediatric work load. I deal with children with hearing, ear, nasal and throat problems. I assess and manage children with balance problems/dizziness. My operative experience includes extensive general paediatric otolaryngological surgery including tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, grommet insertion, myringoplasty (repair of perforated eardrums) and mastoid surgery.
MEDICOLEGAL EXPERIENCE:
I have been carrying out medico-legal work since 2005. Since 2019 I have undertaken clinical negligence reports. I have a supra-specialist interest in Otology and Neuro-otology. I regularly prepare medico-legal reports for suspected personal injury with ear symptoms related to head/neck trauma including whiplash injuries and noise induced hearing loss. I have prepared over 600 medical reports since 2005. At present I am preparing approximately 40 reports per year. My claimant/defendant/joint ratio is approximately 95% claimant / 4% defendant / 1% joint. I have prepared multiple (over 15) joint statements. I have attended court once as a professional witness.
I regularly provide reports in relation to personal injury (e.g., industrial deafness and hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness and ear pain after head and neck trauma) clinical negligence, causation, condition and prognosis.
I have used my skills in computing to write a excel sheet to analyse patients hearing levels, compare these to the expected hearing and compute the statistical likelihood of pathological / industrial hearing loss.
I organised a training course in Coventry in 2008 specifically dealing with medicolegal aspects of noise induced hearing loss.
I have attended one court case as a professional witness and spent time in the box.
I have attended the following medicolegal courses:
- • Premex Medicolegal Course Birmingham March 2022
- • Online clinical negligence medicolegal training course Sep 2020
- • Premex 2 Day Conference Birmingham, UK November 2019
- • Into court (Academy of experts) London, UK November 2011
- • Medicolegal Expert Course Leicester June 2010
- • Foundation Course (Academy of Experts) London December 2007
TEACHING EXPERIENCE:
I am involved in teaching and examining undergraduate medical students at Aston medical School. During my work at University Hospital Coventry I was involved in teaching junior doctors. I have delivered lectures to GP’s, medical, dental and speech therapist. I teach ST’s, medical students and nursing staff. I have extensive small group teaching experience during my anatomy demonstrator job: mostly gross and clinical anatomy. I have taught First Aid to medical students and members of the public. I have attended a Teaching and Lecturing Skills Course in Glasgow.
I organise a national Temporal Bone Dissection course twice a year.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:
Recent Research:
Research into the efficacy of Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty (using the Bielefeld Catheter) for patients with Eustachian Tube symptoms. The work has been completed and a paper has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Laryngology and Otology. Several case report (see publications).
TWJ Fellow 2002:
I designed and tested a coated cochlear implant electrode capable of secreting neurotrophic growth factors and thus preventing degeneration of the eighth nerve after acquired deafness. The work was carried out on an animal model at the Kresge Hearing Research Institute (KHRI), Ann Arbor Michigan, USA.
My work, carried out over a relatively short period (seven months) was productive. Dr Raphael (my supervisor) taught me various laboratory techniques including animal care and surgery (including cochlear implantation), cell culture, viral transduction, preparation and staining of cochlear tissues, cochlear electrode manufacture and computer image analysis. I regularly attended laboratory meetings where I was able to discuss my work and learn of other research in our laboratory. Within the KHRI I was able to attend exciting presentations from external visiting researchers.
During my stay I had the opportunity to visit the clinical Otolaryngology department. I attended outpatient department and observed surgery at the University of Michigan Hospital.
I have already presented some of my work at the Association for Research in Otolaryngology Feb 2003, Florida, USA, Royal Society of Medicine Otology section May 2003 (Exmoor Plastics Short Paper Prize Winner), Scottish Otolaryngology Society June 2003 and British Academic Conference in Otolaryngology July 2003, Birmingham, UK.
A paper based on my work has been published in the journal Hearing Research (see publications).
Other Clinical:
Randomised clinical trial on Ginkgo Biloba and Tinnitus and Meta-analysis of randomised trials. I designed this study and obtained ethical approval in two hospitals. I carried out the study in special research sessions were I interviewed, examined and audiologically assessed patients. I statistically analysed the data. The results of the study have been presented at the Otolaryngology Research Society. I performed a meta-analysis of previous randomised trial on Ginkgo Biloba and Tinnitus. A paper based on the research has been accepted for publication by the journal Clinical Otolaryngology.
Retrospective review of laser turbinectomy in children. This retrospective study involved case note review and patient interview. Part of the study involved histological study of turbinectomy specimens. A paper based on the study has been accepted for publication in the journal Lasers in Surgery and Medicine. The finding of the study were also presented at the Joint International Laser Conference in Edinburgh September 2003.
Retrospective review of Paediatric Cochlear Implantation in to Dysplastic Cochleae. This work has been presented at the Scottish Otolaryngology Society meeting.
Case reports. I have published several case reports on various otolaryngological conditions.
Undergraduate:
1991: Otolaryngology Clinical attachment. Retrospective review of Globus pharyngeus and its relationship to Pharyngeal Cancer.
1989: BSc. (Hons.) In Experimental Immunology and Oncology, University of Manchester.
The degree work involved part research and part formal structured teaching and was assessed by thesis and formal written examination. As a part of my work, I carried out skin grafting operations on nude rats using ether anaesthesia. The grafts were MHC Class 1 disparate. The effect of naïve CD4 and CD8 Thoracic Duct Lymphocytes, transferred to the above rats on rejection, was studied. In addition, work was carried out studying allogeneic lymphocyte cytotoxicity – rejection of transferred MHC disparate lymphocytes – in rats. My research findings were incorporated into a thesis and also contributed to a publication.
